Director's Corner
I would like to ask each of you to go back in time; all the way to High School. What was your favorite subject? Mine was History. The history of the Association for the Hearing Impaired, Inc. is a proud one, full of many wonderful stories and countless reports and documents demonstrating that the Association has, for 25 years, served the needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons, of all ages, in Warren, Washington and Saratoga Counties and beyond. Many individuals, too many to name, have contributed to this agency’s success. I have had the distinct privilege of working with some of these men and women for the past ten-months. They have served as my mentors and will play valuable roles, as will some of you, in charting the AFTHI’s course for the future.
Listen Up! Is currently read by more than 800 households, businesses, clergy, schools and community organizations. Still, I believe that there are many individuals and families who no longer feel a connection to the Association for the Hearing Impaired, Inc. Please help me embarked on a “Where Are They Now?” search campaign. In an effort to mobilize the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities; their families, friends, classmates and co-workers, I am interested in reaching out to those individuals that have a past history with the AFTHI and introduce them to our current members.
The AFTHI proposes to do this as follows:
(a) Developing new “social” programs and special events/activities: opportunities for the deaf and hard of hearing, as well as their families and friends, to regularly meet and network around common interests, issues and concerns at the AFTHI or other locations.
(b) Scheduling a “Class Reunion.” I am working hard to develop this initiative whose purpose is to invite individuals that have, during the past 25 years, participated in or accessed services (even on only one or just a few occasions or not recently) from the AFTHI, as well as their families,
friends, co-workers/employers to attend an evening a family entertainment; fun for all ages.
(c) Coin Drop to support AFTHI programs/services in Warren, Washington and Saratoga Counties and beyond.
Note: Its is my intent to schedule the Class Reunion and Coin Drop during the month of July. Many More Details to Soon Follow!
Sincerely,
Bennet F. Driscoll, Jr.

Can You spare your time? - Getting Help for the AFTHI's Office!
As follow-up to last month's Listen Up! Director's Corner, the AFTHI is interested in speaking with individuals willing to share a few hours a week of their time and talents in our office. Administrative support is needed for answering telephones, greeting visitors, word processing letters and reports as well as assisting in the preparation and mailing of Listen Up!, each month. The AFTHI is presently working with Mr. Jeff Stewart from the local RSVP (Retired & Seniors Volunteer Program) and with Ms. Ann Slade, the representative from the Path Stone Program (formerly Green Thumb, Experience Works & Rural Opportunities) a paid employment program for seniors located at the Warren County Office for the Aging.
The AFTHI is extremely pleased to announce that Ms. Kassey Granger, the daughter of Sandie and Jim Clark is relocating her family back to the Tri-County Region and has accepted a part-time position with the agency. Most of Kassey’s program management work will focus on the demonstration of assistive equipment from our Loan-Out Program, facilitating Peer Advocacy Groups, the instruction of ASL and Lip-Reading classes and accompanying me to Community Outreach events. If everything goes as planned, we hope to have Kassey on board sometime in July.

Raising the Bar to Raise Necessary Funds
The Tri-County United Way (TCUW), for many years, has been the AFTHI's largest source of funding. The TCUW supports a total of 21 local community organizations; each of which offers important programs and provides necessary services. On April 27th, AFTHI board members JoAnn Zales and Candie Kilburn joined me for a presentation before the United Way's Community Investment Committee. I am sure that you can appreciate the many economic challenges that this year's United Way Campaign faced. The AFTHI owes a debt of gratitude to all United Way supporters and deeply appreciates knowing that this year's allocation will be close to last year's amount. Thank you to Barbara Sweet and all of those that volunteer their time and talents for the general good of this community.

Lions Hearing Conservation Society Annual Dinner Meeting
I am proud to announce that I was the Guest Speaker at this year's Annual Dinner Meeting of the Lions Hearing Conservation Society held at the Rain Dancer Restaurant, just north of Amsterdam on May 24th. Glens Falls Lions Jim and Sandie Clark as well as Rose Ora Stewart and members from other Tri-County Region Lions Clubs joined me.
The LHCS's mission is to provide programs and assistance for persons who have a hearing loss. The LHCS of 20-Y2 was created in 1975 with the community interest in mind. Its goal remains to prevent deafness by early detection of hearing problems, correction of existing hearing losses & to educate the public on what causes hearing loss and how/when to protect yourself from damaging noise.
The Lions Hearing Aid Bank RECYCLES old/used hearing aids. All styles and models are accepted. The LHCS has 8 Loan Out Centers, including the AFTHI, where you can borrow a variety of amplification & alert devices for the deaf and hard of hearing. This enables you to try devices and find the one that best accommodates your hearing loss, free of charge. Also, if you need financial assistance in purchasing devices, your local Lions Club may be able to help you. To find a Lions Club near you; go to the website: www.lionsclub.org . Listen Up! readers may drop off your old hearing aids at the AFTHI or the Loan Out Center nearest to you. The AFTHI's Loan Out Center is additionally supported through funding from the Tri-County United Way as well as contributions from area businesses and individuals.

Written by a Friend of the AFTHI...
When my sister was younger she came home
from school one day and demanded that I take
her to the library so she could get books on
sign language. I asked why? She told me that
there was a new kid at school who was deaf
and she wanted to befriend him. Today, I stood
beside her at their wedding watching her sign! |

Rene G. Pellerin was born in Quebec, Canada and moved to Vermont at a young age. He graduated from Austine School for the Deaf and then went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from Gallaudet University. He, his brother and three uncles have Usher Syndrome. His professional life includes a long history of work all dedicated to the Deaf community, including positions at DEAF, Inc. in Allston, Massachusetts, a rehabilitation Counselor for the Deaf for 2 years in Vermont and the State Coordinator for the Deaf for Vermont for 15 years. Rene's last four years of work were as the Coordinator at the Northern Vermont Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Rene was instrumental in the passage of laws supporting the needs of members of Deaf community and sign language interpreters throughout Vermont. He has been married to an interpreter Joan for 30 years and together they have four adult children, two teenage adopted daughters and a three-year-old grandson. Long recognized by his Deaf peers as an amazing
entertainer, he is a sought-after storyteller. In recent years, through the efforts of Vermont Very Special Arts, Rene has expanded his repertoire of comedic performances to include general audiences at disability events and Community Theater. His stories are mostly about his personal experiences with Usher's Syndrome where he educates and informs the audience
in a very funny way what is has been like to walk in his shoes. Several stories are about his travel with and without support and how he encouraged obstacles and overcame them with humor. Other stories are about his personal experiences being Deaf-Blind in two settings, the hearing and the Deaf worlds.
